(Foreign) on Instagram: "Learn A Tad: The Conversation Pit Collective. + A lost art, the conversation pit is a place we almost all seem to envy the ethos of but rarely get to see in current culture. Where did they come from and where are we going? Popularized originally by Japanese architecture, many argue the current western conversation pit was inspired by the European enclosed areas that would surround fireplaces through the 1100’s. Modernist architects such as Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were some of the first to use a conversation pit as the centerpiece as homes in the 1950s, changing the narrative from expansive and cold to close knit and warm.( such as the iconic “Miller House” from 1958)(slide 3) The trend would really hit a peak from the 1950’s to the 1970’s with an over saturation that led to many sunken living rooms being filled in and not many left at all around this period (even though there has been a small resurgence). With the way culture is getting back to the values of close knit time and relationships over full modernist structure, I truly wonder if a full comeback of the sunken living room is possible, or if it would just be another over saturated regret with time."
