They met in New York in 1942, when Ernst, already a giant of Surrealism visited Tanning’s studio and encountered her iconic self-portrait Birthday (image 3). What followed was one of modern art’s great relationships: Their bond was famously intense, with chess, conversation, and a shared surreal imagination becoming part of the mythology around them. Ernst helped define Surrealism through collage, frottage, and a lifelong push into the unconscious. Tanning, meanwhile, emerged as far more than a counterpart, a singular artist whose paintings, sculptures, and writing opened Surrealism into something more intimate, psychological, sensual, and strange. After marrying in 1946, the couple made a home in Sedona, Arizona, where the desert became part of their shared world and creative language.
